Have you ever “drawn a blank” when someone speaks to you in Spanish?

How much more confident would you feel if You Understood Spoken Spanish?

• Imagine how many doors would open if you could speak to anyone and understand them.

• Imagine if spoken Spanish stopped feeling lightning fast so you wouldn’t struggle to understand everything you hear during a conversation.

• Imagine how much faster you would improve your Spanish if you could understand native speakers in movies, radio, and television.

Now, if you think:

  • “When native speakers talk, it sounds so fast to me, and I am afraid I will never be able to keep up.”

  • “When I do start to speak Spanish, the Spanish-speaking person assumes I am very fluent and they start speaking Very fast and I do not understand and I get nervous and then I draw a 'blank" and can not answer them back.”

  • “Native speakers talk so fast and I can’t understand what they are saying. I get so frustrated and feel like I will never understand them.”

Well, let me tell you, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT!

Why do so many students struggle to understand spoken Spanish in real life even after doing well on language apps or getting good grades in Spanish class?

Because they practice their listening and comprehension skills the wrong way.

They choose materials that are either too simple or way too difficult for their level but they don’t follow a natural progression that allows them to improve their listening skills gradually.

We’ve all been there at some point while learning a new language:

After learning the basics and making good initial progress, you memorize phrases to have simple conversations in real life.

So one day you feel confident enough to use one of the phrases you’ve practiced dozens of times.

You go ahead and say it out loud,

You do it so well the Spanish speaker assumes you are fluent and starts speaking VERY FAST,

You can’t understand and then, you draw a blank not knowing what to do… It’s SOOOOO AWKWARD!

We’ve all been there at some point while learning a new language. It also happened to me when I was learning English and French (I hated it more than realizing I forgot my phone at home after reaching my destination. UGH!!!)

Over time, I have received many inspiring emails from students whose determination and kindness inspired me to create learning materials designed to empower them.

Here are a few of the stories that moved me:

-“I work in an area that has a lot of hispanic folks that need help. It would just be nice to be able to communicate with them.”

-“I work in a hospital and there are Spanish speaking patients and relatives that I wish I could help more instead of saying "Lo siento, no hablo espanol."

-“Going Peru to help a church. I will be traveling there for five years. Retired Army Officer. I want to help others.”

-“I'd like to be able to greet, ask how the students are doing, what can I help them with, tell them where different places on campus are, library hours/location, answer basic research questions.”

-"To be more fit to the future job I want to take- Spanish bilingual customer representative in a call center. It's fun learning the spanish language. It has a wide array of lessons."

-"I want to learn Spanish mainly to keep my brain active... it's a challenge and gives me something to try to accomplish (I am in my late 60's). And with the increasing Hispanic population, I want to be able to better converse with my latin neighbors and team members at work."

-“I am a builder, and so many of my workers speak Spanish as their first language...some, as their only language. I see how much it means to them when I try to learn their language...so I want to speak fluently.”

-"I want to help my children learn Spanish and inspire them" - "I would like to be able to socialize and interact in the office in a casual way. I would like to be able to interact with people."

-“I would love to communicate with non-english speaking migrants in order to help them assimilate and just find their way to important places. Also, if I am in the grocery store I could help them with finding items and explaining prices. I know most items are labeled in Spanish, but where are they in the giant stores?”

Stories like these inspired me to create the learning materials I wish I had when I started learning foreign languages.

So I decided to create something to empower students who want to open doors at work and serve people around them and their communities.

Now, let’s imagine 2 scenarios:

-Scenario 1:

Think about next week at work. A Spanish-speaking customer comes in, and you say to yourself, "today is the day I use my Spanish to stand out and get those promotions rolling in."

You greet the customer in Spanish, but his reply sounds SO FAST it's hard to catch everything.

You start to feel the pressure to respond quickly, get nervous, and then you draw a blank, feeling awkward and embarrassed in front of your coworkers

(and you feel so miserable you just want to say: “Houston, we have a problem” and to crawl into a hole to eat 10 boxes of Oreos, never to be seen again!)

-Scenario 2:

Compare that person to you…

You are at work in a few weeks, and a Spanish-speaking customer enters.

You greet her, she replies in conversational Spanish, you confidently understand everything she says, you answer easily and close a new sale in front of your boss within minutes.

And now compound that 10 times per week for the next six months.

You do the math.

Now, let’s imagine something that could make things much easier for you...

What if you could listen to native Spanish speakers and pause time for a few moments,

So you could get the help of a translator speaking in your ear to help you understand the parts you missed,

And then go back in time quickly so you can hear the same Spanish sentence again after understanding the bits you missed?

That would make things easier, wouldn’t it?

Well, now YOU CAN TRY IT!

I’ve created practice materials that help you recreate that process using digital technology, which does wonders for your listening.

Whether you started watching Dora The Explorer a few weeks ago or you’ve been binging on telenovelas for years, this is YOUR time to finally understand spoken Spanish gradually, at your own pace.

-Even if you have great difficulties picking out individual words in sentences when spoken to (and it makes you want to smack them in the head, so they finally start speaking slowly)

-Even if you find it challenging to set time aside to focus on your learning

-Even if you struggle to retain vocabulary and sometimes feel like giving up and going for margaritas at noon on weekdays.

This course has been designed to help you do that (Understand more spoken Spanish, not drink margaritas at noon. Sorry!)

-Do you die a little inside every time you “draw a blank” when someone speaks fast to you in Spanish?

-Would you rather bite into a raw beet than continue wasting time and missing opportunities at work?

-Would you like to confidently understand spoken Spanish, open doors, and get paid more?

Since I’ve concluded that perfecting time travel would take too much work, I’ve decided to keep things simple and make it easy for you to practice using standard digital technology (after all, we have managed to travel in time very slowly. When compared to our childhood, we actually live in the future!)

I’ve created the learning materials I wish I had when I was learning English and French so you don’t have to go through the struggles I went through.

Which, among many other things, included hundreds of hours listening to the Beastie Boys and their intricate lyrics, rewinding movies like a maniac, and watching reruns of popular TV shows until I developed a major crush on Jennifer Aniston (“Friends” and “Seinfeld” were my favorite shows back then!)

At this point, you may be wondering:

.

“Is this Course Right for me?”

This course is NOT for people with zero knowledge of Spanish or beginners who are just getting started (Sorry, but I need to be very clear. Real beginners need something different, and I’m currently working on a separate course for them.)

.

This course (the one on this page) is for people who already have a basic knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and basic grammar and who want to understand more spoken Spanish.

.

If you know how to introduce yourself and talk about the things you like, need, or want. If you can understand very slow Spanish, and want to understand more spoken Spanish in real life, then this course is the one for you.

.

This is a hands-on course designed to help you understand more spoken Spanish by actually listening to lots of spoken Spanish at a level of difficulty that’s manageable for you.

.

This course is designed to suit different levels of spoken Spanish comprehension to help beginners and intermediate students.

.

We will start with the basic building blocks of spoken Spanish by going over letters that sound similar to English and the group of letters that sound considerably different from English.

After that, we will review the sound of frequently used Spanish words selected using the 80/20 Principle (the few things that matter most), so you can get used to how they sound in everyday conversations and gain more confidence as you practice.

.

Once we have covered the basics, we will review sets of common phrases used in everyday life (no curse words are included for now. Sorry! But don’t worry. You’ll eventually find them on your own, and they can be delicious when used at the right time!)

.

Next, we will continue to follow a natural progression by going over groups of S-L-OOO-W paragraphs that are part of articles about Latin American culture using the Dual Spanish Method (so you can have more topics of conversation when you meet someone.)

.

First, you will listen to each sentence in Spanish at a slow speed,

.

Then in English,

.

And then in Spanish again at a slow speed to test your listening skills one more time and compare it with your first try, so your mind can fill in the gaps and connect the pieces together to help you understand more Spoken Spanish.

.

It’s like having audible training wheels for your Spanish listening skills!

.

They help you build confidence as you practice without falling over or making the process exceedingly frustrating (Life is hard enough already. Spanish doesn’t have to be!)

.

In the end, we will go over the entire article one more time at a moderate speed, only in Spanish, to give you a chance to test your comprehension one more time.

In the next section, we will listen to conversations about social and work-related scenarios that talk about the present, past, and future at a moderate speed using the Dual Spanish Method.

.

In the last section of the course, we will go over a set of articles using the Dual Spanish Method at a fast-paced conversational speed as a final challenge.

“But what if I can't find the time to practice and focus on my learning?”

This course has been designed to make it easy to find time to practice and avoid one of the most common problems students face when learning Spanish.

.

Each lesson is 15-minutes long, and to make things easier, you only need to listen to one lesson per day (a few lessons are a little longer, but they're close to the 15-minute mark.)

.

The course includes 15 hours of listening materials emphasizing the intermediate section to help students get past the intermediate plateau.

.

These learning materials focus primarily on audio so you can listen and practice on your phone while doing everyday activities.

.To ensure you are ready to move on, you will be required to listen to each lesson a few times until you can to fully understand it in Spanish.

.

Depending on how much time you have, you can listen to one lesson a few times per day or listen to the same lesson one time on multiple days until you are ready to move on to the next one. You can move at your own pace!

.

What’s most important is that you listen to at least 15 minutes per day.

Many happy students use these learning materials to practice during their daily commute, when they exercise, or while walking their dog (prancing is always encouraged!)

.

If you are doing something that would allow you to listen to music, you can use that time to practice your Spanish listening skills (with or without earphones, depending on how many nosy people are around you)

Additional formats:

Each audio is accompanied by a printable PDF transcript so you can read along and make notes the first few times you listen to a lesson.

After listening to a lesson while reading the transcript one or 2 times, you can continue listening on your phone without reading the transcript until you can understand the entire lesson in Spanish.

.

Besides accessing these learning materials online using a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone, you’ll also have the option to download the audio files and PDF transcripts to practice on your devices even if you don’t have a connection.

.

“Does it work? What do other people think about this?”

Here are a few testimonials from students who’ve tried this method in the past:

.

“This program is very useful. After trying several different ones over the years this has been the best one by far. While other programs have been helpful and I learned from them Spanish for Your Job gets to the pertinent material without a lot of unnecessary information. Being able to read along while listening allows me to separate the Spanish words all while improving my spelling and reading skills.

The lessons are also a great way to learn about the culture, history, and current events. I’ve never come across a program that includes so much. Please keep up the great work I’ll be spreading the word to all my interested friends”

– Amy B. – Reading, Pennsylvania

.

.

“I have tried many methods of improving my Spanish speaking and understanding, including watching videos of other teachers.

I have found these Spanish For Your Job materials especially helpful because: 1) The topics are interesting, and the dialogues are especially good for practicing real-life conversations; 2) The English translation immediately after the Spanish phrases gives me immediate confirmation of my interpretation of the phrases; and 3) The consistency in the format combined with the brief amount of time it takes to listen make the lessons easy to fit into my day. I would recommend these materials because listening to the radio or TV in Spanish does not give you the feedback that is needed to gain confidence in your comprehension of spoken Spanish.”

– Stephen M. – Accountant – San Antonio, Texas

.

.

The Spanish For Your Job audios and transcripts helped me with a big hurdle in learning Spanish. Understanding Spanish in “real time” when listening to a Spanish speaker is difficult for a number of reasons. The speaker may speak rapidly, not speak clearly or speak with an accent.

I am learning new words every day. Even if I am following the speaker, he or she may say a word or a grammatical construction that I do not know and I lose the context of the message. In real time conversations, I have to listen and understand at the same time I am formulating my response.

These audios and the accompanying materials focus on the issue of understanding Spanish when spoken.

Miguel uses different topics to introduce different words and I learn more if the topic is interesting. He provides different and interesting topics and speaks in different tempos to test my ability to comprehend. The English language translation provided in the audio and transcript gives a quick point of reference for a word or phrase that I did not understand.

The audios and related materials were helpful to me in dissecting and understanding everyday phrases in which the words individually have a different meaning than the phrase itself. It is simple and effective.

The audios and PDF formats allowed me to learn in different settings. Before I go on long trips, I load audios and the transcripts onto my phone. A delayed flight now provides time to learn and review. The more I hear and read, the more comfortable I am speaking Spanish. Repetition is a good thing for me. The Spanish For Your Job package gave me instant repetition to burn the words and phrases into my brain.

– Steven A. – Lawyer – Detroit, Michigan

.

.

“My level in Spanish is intermediate and I am very glad to have been using the Spanish for your job materials on a daily basis, because since I do not have much free time, it helps me practice and refresh my Spanish by devoting only 15 minutes per day.

Learning a language is about time and repetition. The Spanish for your job materials offer information for a variety of different subjects and in a very efficient way ~ including repetition and translation from English to Spanish and viceversa ~ It makes you get used to listening and correcting the mistakes.

Overall, it has helped a lot to improve my skills and vocabulary and since I am working as a PR, being good at languages is one of the greatest assets for my job, and surely these practice materials have helped my fluency a lot and have boosted my confidence while I’m speaking.”

– Alina M. – Public Relations Officer – Athens, Greece

.

.

“I have been using practice materials from Spanish For Your Job for over a year now, and it has been the best online practice guide that I have come across. The fact that the practice material is not hours long makes it a perfect fit for my busy day. On a quick lunch break, I can use my phone or tablet to access a 15-minute lesson and feel confident that in that small time frame I have learned something new.

One of the main reasons I enjoy Spanish For Your Job is the fact that the lesson is Spanish to English and back to Spanish again. This technique helps with retaining the information and it allows you to see exactly how much you are actually comprehending.

Last but not least, one of my favorite characteristics about this Spanish course is the fact that it is taught by someone who actually cares if you are learning and wants you to succeed.

I feel lucky to have stumbled upon this course and I now can’t imagine trying to conquer the Spanish language without it. It has been just over a year and I honestly feel that my skills have improved tremendously. ¡Gracias Señor Lira!”
